University of Turabo undertakes research on global citizenship among UNAI member institutions

United Nations Academic Impact (UNAI) member institutions are committed to encouraging global citizenship through education. Ana G. Méndez University System (AGMUS) is the UNAI Global Hub for Global Citizenship.

3 October 2018 - The United Nations Academic Impact (UNAI) believes that promoting global citizenship allows individuals to embrace their social responsibility to act for the benefit of all societies, not just their own. Global citizenship may be considered an umbrella term for social, political, environmental, and economic actions of globally minded individuals and communities worldwide.

Ana G. Méndez University System (Commonwealth of Puerto Rico) is the UNAI Global Hub for Global Citizenship, for which its University of Turabo is a fundamental component. This institution of higher education is currently undertaking an extensive research project entitled Words, terms and concepts that reflect understanding of global citizenship: A quantitative descriptive study.

The research project, which is led by professors David Méndez Pagán, Sandra Guzmán Figueroa and Angel M. Ginorio Martínez, has the purpose to explore the terms, words, and concepts that better reflect educators' understanding of global citizenship. Also, this study, which has six research questions, aims to provide a valuable framework for global citizenship education around the world.

The population for this study will be composed of institutions of higher education from all regions of the world, that are current members of UNAI. In order to collect the data, researchers will use the Global Citizenship-Terms, Words, and Concepts Survey (GC-TWC Survey), ideally to be completed by one representative per UNAI member institution.

The survey, available, in English language through an online form, contains seven demographic variables, three experiences and perception variables, and an alphabetically organized list of the 102 terms, words and concepts most frequently mentioned in literature. A descriptive statistics analysis will be used to identify elements that may define, describe or illustrate global citizenship among UNAI member institutions.

The survey can be accessed here.
