Please provide a brief description of your academic structure:
UNIVASF is an institution linked to the Ministry of Education of Brazil that was created by Law no. 10473 of June 27, 2002, starting to work two years latter. It is headquartered in Petrolina, State of Pernambuco, a city located 750 km away of The Atlantic coast and presenting the northeastern semiarid and The São Francisco's Valley as a reference framework. It is currently set up in a seven-campi structure which are distributed in the states of Pernambuco, Bahia and Piauí. Its geographical location in the northeastern semi-arid lands of Brazil, almost equidistant from the great northeastern worldwide known capitals (Recife, Salvador, Fortaleza), enables it to add great importance to the action of this university, as it truly enables the internalization of knowledge. UNIVASF has a staff of 935, 367 technical and administrative staff and 568 professor/researchers, 6,825 undergraduate students enrolled in 35 courses, and 743 graduate students enrolled in 31 courses (4 PhD programs and 27 máster programs).
Please describe briefly any activities your institution is already carrying out, which are relevant to UNAI and its principles:
UNIVASF location is historically delayed in terms of human development indicators such that in its 15 working years it has changed the destine of hundreds of Young persons who lived very far from the cities that hosted the main Universities in Brazil. Poverty is still a remarkable feature, however, due to the hard-living condition in such lands where the anual mean level of rain does not reach 10 mm and Education is certainly the best instrument UNIVASF offers to get along with this. Such an adverse wheather is not exclusive of this region in the world and knowledge (scientific and technological) to face the lacking of water can be found abroad, in countries of the Mean Orient, for example. These are also issues UNIVASF runs to its institutional neighborhood, by means of its research and development endeavours, and that have given a better reality to people around with a sustainable manner.
