The Federal University of Alagoas (or the Universidade Federal de Alagoas in Portuguese or UFAL) is a federal institution of higher education founded in 1961. Located in the city of Maceió, in the coastal state of Alagoas, the Federal University of Alagoas is one of the main research centers in the Brazilian north eastern region (which is one of the five regions of Brazil). Universidade Federal de Alagoas (UFAL) is the largest higher education and research institution in Alagoas, Brazil. UFAL has around 26,000 students enrolled in 84 degree courses and employs 1,700 technical and administrative staff and 1,400 teachers, of whom 690 have doctoral degrees. It has a total of 258 research groups, 1,125 lines of research and 3,646 researchers among the teachers, technicians and students. The main teaching languages are Portuguese and English. The University has 50 international agreements with higher education institutions around the world, with participation in partnerships including Erasmus Mundus, Rede Galileu and Science without Borders. Here, students and faculty members also enjoy a multicultural environment and mingle in a melting pot.

Universidade Federal de Alagoas (UFAL) has been committed to many of the 10 principles fostered by UNAI. Here are the initiatives (related to teaching, research, extension, and management) supporting these principles, especially the ones concerning ‘Education opportunity for all, Fighting poverty through education, Higher education opportunity for every interested individual, Human rights and Inter-cultural dialogue and understanding -- unlearning intolerance’: PROEST – Pró Reitoria Estudantil (Office of Students Affairs) aims at providing assistance to prevent students from withdrawing from the programs, particularly the ones in circumstances of social vulnerability. <https://ufal.br/estudante/assistencia-estudantil> PROEX – Pró Reitoria de Extensão (Extension Office) designs programs to outreach the community, such as secondary school students and local people. <https://ufal.br/ufal/extensao/programas> NEAB – Núcleo de Estudos Afro-Brasileiros (Nucleus for Afro Brazilian Studies) engages in affirmative actions that aim at valuing Afro Brazilian History and fighting racism. <https://www.blogger.com/profile/16000982238626101051> UFAL also has supporting bodies to assist the external community in (a) health promotion (University Hospital), (b) supporting children (the Nucleus for Child Development), (c) accessibility conditions for people with disabilities (Nucleus for Accessibility), (d) offering meals to students, teaching and technical bodies, as well as the external community at little cost. <https://ufal.br/ufal/institucional/orgaos-de-apoio/academico>
