The COVID-19 crisis has exacerbated economic and social disparities around the world. Even though the pandemic has affected all segments of the population, the impact is particularly detrimental to members of the most vulnerable social groups including older persons, persons with disabilities, youth and indigenous people.
The COVID-19 crisis also risks reversing decades of progress in the fight against poverty and aggravating already high levels of inequality within and between countries. In large developing and least developed countries, the degree of complexity of the crisis is further compounded by the significant size of vulnerable populations and the numbers of people who work in the informal economy.
“This human crisis demands coordinated, decisive, inclusive and innovative policy action from the world’s leading economies – and maximum financial and technical support for the poorest and most vulnerable people and countries,” said UN Secretary-General António Guterres. The crisis should reaffirm our resolve to fight inequality in all its forms and manifestations.
