UNAI ASPIRE Korea raises awareness of the Sustainable Development Goals through education activities and partnerships

UN Academic Impact ASPIRE Korea conducted 28 activities in 2019 in support of the 17 Sustainable Development Goals of the United Nations. Below are two recent examples of their activities organized in collaboration with other ASPIRE chapters:

Good Will Session

The Good Will session is an annual exchange programme between ASPIRE Korea and ASPIRE Japan to build a sense of community and a better understanding of the Sustainable Development Goals. The 6th Good Will Session has taken place in Kyung-Hee University, Seoul, from 5-6 July 2019.

The topic of the 6th Good Will Session was "Korea’s and Japan’s Society”. The discussions focused on the SDGs 3 (Good Health and Well-Being), 5 (Gender Equality), 7 (Affordable and Clean Energy) and 11 (Sustainable Cities and Communities). 8 teams consisted of Korean and Japan students presented on the 4 goals. Based on the presentations, students from both countries compared how these goals were realized in the two countries and discussed actively for solutions to the issues.

During the 2-day session, students from both countries developed a deeper understanding of the implementation of the SDGs in Korea and Japan, bringing ASPIRE Korea and ASPIRE Japan closer to each other. “It was a great experience to be able to meet various people and hear their opinions,” said a participant, “in the process of synthesizing opinions, we learned various values, which changed our opinions. It was a great way to know more about SDGs.”

The students believed that the session enabled them to contribute to SDG 17 (Partnership for the Goals). They hope ASPIRE Korea and ASPIRE Japan will continue to maintain and develop the cooperation in the future.

World Water Day Campaign

ASPIRE Korea’s Handong University branch and ASPIRE Mexico’s Centro de Enseñanza Técnica y Superior (CETYS) Universidad jointly launched a campaign to commemorate World Water Day and promote SDG 6 (Clean Water and Sanitation) on 22 March. The international day was designated by the United Nations to highlight the importance of water and inspire global cooperation for resolving the water deficiency problem.

On 20 March, students of the two universities came together to participate in educational activities such as panel discussions, making EM mudballs, putting up World Water Day stickers and observing the water sanitation process. Through the campaign, students were provided with an opportunity to learn about the water problem faced by the world today, and the actions they can take to save water. They came to realize that the water issue was not only an environmental problem, it also affects education, health and the economy.

This campaign marks the first collaboration between ASPIRE Korea and ASPIRE Mexico toward the same goal. The two chapters look forward to expanding the opportunities to work together on more campaigns in the future and developing an ongoing partnership.
