Sophia University organizes 'United Nations Weeks' in commemoration of the 73rd anniversary of the UN Charter

12 October 2018 - Sophia University (Japan), a member institution of the United Nations Academic Impact (UNAI), will hold its 10th United Nations Weeks to celebrate United Nations Day. Various events will take place from 15 - 29 October 2018 aiming to reflect and think together about our common future. One of the events is a panel discussion entitled “Refugees and Asylum Seekers in a Multi-Cultural Japan?” which looks to answer questions like: How is Japan supporting refugees? Can these displaced people find a place in Japan, and if so, where? Can Japan become a more multi-cultural society? And what can we, as a university community, do to support these people in need?. The main panelist will be Dirk Hebecker, Representative of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) in Japan.

On 19 October the documentary Sonita will be screened. Winner of the 2016 Sundance Film Festival Grand Jury Prize and Audience Award for World Cinema Documentary, Sonita is about a determined and animated Afghan teenage refugee living in Tehran (Iran), who dreams of being a famous rapper. Another event will be a remembrance of former Secretary-General of the United Nations, Kofi Annan. This will happen on 24 October 2018 which is the actual United Nations Day and will have the participation of Franz Baumann, former Assistant-Secretary-General of the United Nations.
