Secretary-General congratulates KazNU on the launch of UNAI hub on sustainability

Below is the message of the United Nations Secretary-General to the Kazakh National University on the occasion of the launch on 3 March 2014 of the United Nations Academic Impact hub on sustainability:

I congratulate the al-Farabi Kazakh National University on the launch of the United Nations Academic Impact hub on sustainability. With this initiative KazNU is showing a strong and welcome commitment to mobilize the global academic community in a vital area of human concern.

Placing the world on a more sustainable path is one of the leading challenges of our time. While we have made remarkable progress towards achieving the Millennium Development Goals, much work remains if we are to reach all of the poor and vulnerable by next year’s deadline. Member States are also deep in discussion on shaping a bold development vision for the post-2015 period, including a set of sustainable development goals. The year 2015 is also when we must reach a new global agreement on climate change. KazNU’s engagement is thus very timely.

The United Nations Academic Impact is rooted in my conviction that the United Nations and the world’s academic community have a lot to gain from each other. The research and experiments that you have carried out in such areas as agriculture, environment and infectious diseases have greatly contributed to the UN’s mission. I look forward to your continued engagement and congratulate KazNU on its heightened involvement in this important UN effort.

I wish KazNU my best wishes in making the UNAI hub on sustainability a great success.
