Since its creation, the UN has often been called upon to prevent disputes from escalating into war, or to help restore peace when armed conflict does break out, and to promote lasting peace in societies emerging from wars. The Security Council, the General Assembly and the Secretary-General all play major, complementary roles in fostering peace and security.
The Departments of Political Affairs, Peacekeeping Operations and Field Support as well as the Peacebuilding Support Office all work to maintain international peace and security in the areas of conflict prevention and mediation, peacemaking, peace enforcement and peacebuilding.
Promoting peace and justice is one of 17 Global Goals that make up the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. An integrated approach is crucial for progress across the multiple goals.
