Peace is… beautiful

15 August 2017 — The fourth event of the “Peace is…” series hosted by the Permanent Mission of Japan to the United Nations took place on Friday in the lobby of the General Assembly Building at United Nations Headquarters in New York. The event, entitled “Peace is… beautiful”, celebrated friendship and the 50th anniversary of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN).

Remarks by the Permanent Representatives of Japan and the Philippines to the United Nations opened the event. Professor Noritaka Noda of the Ikenobo Society of Floral Art then gave a demonstration of Ikebana, the Japanese art of flower arrangement. While working on his arrangement, Professor Noda elaborated on the centuries-old art of creating these arrangements, including the symbolic meaning. Following his demonstration, Ambassadors and Permanent Representatives of ASEAN joined him in creating Ikebana arrangements, as did the audience.

The event was concluded by cultural performances such as traditional dances from Cambodia, Indonesia and the Lao People’s Democratic Republic as well as music from the Philippines and Thailand.
