NYU Shanghai hosts second annual Model UN Conference

21 November 2018 - New York University Shanghai, a member institution of the United Nations Academic Impact (UNAI), hosted its second annual Model United Nations Conference in Shanghai, China, on 2-4 November 2018.

Following the success of the first annual conference, the NYU Shanghai Model United Nations Conference 2018 is the largest student-led event in the history of NYU Shanghai. A record number of over 200 participants served as as delegates, chairs, secretariats, directorates and administration staff, under the leadership of Secretary-General Justin Wang and his secretariat team.

The them of the Model UN Conference is “Transnationalism". In its four committees - the Security Council, First Committee (Disarmament and International Security) of the General Assembly, Human Rights Council, and Economic and Social Council, delegates debated intensely over controversial real world issues such as the underrepresentation of women in senior positions, prevention of illicit trafficking of weapons in combat zones, sustainable development, and the situation in the South China Sea.

NYU Shanghai Chancellor Mr. Lizhong Yu, HuaXia Finance CEO Mr. Benny Li, and NYU Shanghai Assistant Professor of Practice in Political Science Ivan Willis Rasmussen addressed the delegates during the opening and closing ceremonies. As the title sponsor, HuaXia Finance provided funding for the conference and engaged in the discussions with their professional advice. Overall, the organizing team looks forward to making the Model United Nations Conference a NYU Shanghai tradition.
