Celebrating Peace: 24-Hour Peace Day Global Broadcast

Each year on 21 September, the International Day of Peace is observed around the world as an occasion for humanity to commit to peace above all differences and contribute to building a culture of peace.

This year, the theme “Together for Peace: Respect, Safety and Dignity for All” puts the focus on engaging and mobilizing people to show support for refugees and migrants.

Next Thursday, 21 September, messages from United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres and United Nations Messengers of Peace Leonardo DiCaprio, Michael Douglas, Jane Goodall and Malala Yousafzai, along with UNICEF Goodwill Ambassadors Shakira Mebarak and Katy Perry, will be featured in a video marathon broadcast by the Unity Foundation and Peace Channel. The broadcast will be launched at 12:01 a.m. EST and continue until 24 September at 11:59 p.m. EST. It can be viewed at http://www.peacechannel.com or http://www.un.org/en/events/peaceday/resources.

Tina Marie Tyler will host the broadcast—the first African American woman to host this special event since the creation of the Peace Day Global Broadcast nine years ago.

“We’re trying to reach as many people as possible with a simple message,” Peace Day Global Broadcast Founder Bill McCarthy explained. “Peace is more than the absence of war. It’s a positive feeling that is a basic right of every human being.”
