Call for Panels and Colloquia: NEEDS 2020

The fifth edition of the Northern European Conference on Emergency and Disaster Studies (NEEDS), hosted by Mid Sweden University and organized by the Risk and Crisis Reaserch Center, will take place on 10-12 March in Östersund, Sweden.

The theme of the conference is Imagining Futures: Interstices and the Immateriality of Disasters. The conference aims to explore the status quo of disaster research and management. The conference wishes to harness its broad, interdisciplinary expertise by gathering disaster researchers from academic institutions and practitioners from the disaster management community (European and beyond) to build networks and to discuss the most pressing issues in disaster research across the academic and practical disciplines.

The NEEDS welcome ideas for panels, workshops and interdisciplinary events aimed at researchers and practitioners featuring research on how disasters are imagined but also on more traditional topics of crisis management, relevant actors and institutions:

  • Panels are regular sessions with short presentations. Panel organizers are invited to send an abstract describing their panel. After the panel abstract has been accepted, the call for papers will open and researchers will be free to submit paper abstracts to the accepted panels. The panel organizers are responsible for reviewing the abstracts submitted to their panel.
  • Colloquia are fora for research-oriented initiatives that do not fit the traditional presentation format. Colloquia may be open or closed sessions such as (and not limited to) round tables, debates, demos, and formal meetings. Colloquium organizers are also invited to send an abstract describing the topic as well as the format in which it will be conducted.
