Call for Contributions: CIES 2020 “Education Beyond the Human"

The Comparative and International Education Society is excited to announce their 64th Annual Conference themed “Education Beyond The Human”, taking place in Miami on March 22-26, 2020. Starting August 15, 2019, CIES invites proposals that respond to the conference theme and build on the expansion of the parameters of knowledge production and educational practice within the field of comparative and international education.

Education Beyond the Human

“Education Beyond the Human” seeks to address the urgent need for a redefinition of what it is to be human and a reconfiguration of the relationship between humans and Earth.

The central concern of CIES 2020 is what these planetary changes – and their political, economic, social, and environmental consequences – entail for education. The location of the annual conference holds great significance, as Miami joins dozens of other major cities vulnerable to flooding with the rise in global temperatures. Moreover, the location serves as a stark and timely reminder that our current preoccupation with global education trends – student achievement tests, competitive education league tables, global ranking exercises, and “best practices” – needs to be carefully reexamined and put into a broader, planetary and more than human perspective.

Accepting Proposals

Conference participants are invited, but not required, to address any of the following themes:

  • Education and Planetary Challenges
  • Education and (Post) Human Futures
  • Education as Sympoiesis

CIES 2020 Miami will accept proposals for contributions in several session formats. The CIES 2020 All Academic online submission system will open on August 15, 2019 and close on September 25, 2019 via the official conference website, cies2020.org.

Academic proposals may be submitted individually or as a group to the following categories: Formal Paper Presentation, Formal Panel Session, Poster Presentation, and Refereed Round-Table Session. Additionally, alternative presentation formats are also available. These include: Pre-conference Workshop, Book Launch, Performance Art Session, Visual Art Installation, Fishbowl Session, and an Off-Site Visit.
