Biswanath College is a premier institute of higher education in Assam, India, with all the potential as a seat of academic excellence in the years to come. Established on 7th September, 1960, the College has been committed to excel in teaching, training, capacity-building, entrepreneurship development, scholarship and public service. At present, the College has streams of Arts, Science and Commerce; offering honours courses in all subjects with competent professors as well as strong library facilities along with vocational courses like BCA, Tea plantation and Management and Functional English. Simultaneously with regular studies, students can avail themselves the opportunities of degrees, diplomas and certificates in distance mode, like Bachelor of Business Administration (BBA), Bachelor of Social Work (BSW), Rural Development, Human Rights, Tourism, and Computer etc. at the Biswanath College study centre under K.K. Handiqui State Open University (KKHSOU). Master Degree and Post Graduate Diplomas in a number of subjects are offered at the college under the Institute of Distance and Open Learning (lDOL) of Gauhati University. The college has been accredited with "B" grade by NAAC (National Assessment and Accreditation Council, India).

Biswanath college, as one of the foremost Colleges of India, has been embedded with the founding principles of social justice, national integration, the democratic way of life, international understanding, secularism, and a scientific approach to the problems of society. Believing in "Sustainability" as the combination of resilient economy, environment and society, the college, from its origin, has been working for the safe and secure future for the upcoming generation. To achieve this goal, the College has initiated health camps in tribal areas, plastic free drive and awareness programmes in rural areas, collection and disposal of single used plastic drives, cleanliness programmes in the tourist places, reading habit drive for rural children etc. The college has also been providing education facilities to all the sections of the society, especially to the weaker sections on the basis of positive discrimination. It allows free education to the Below Poverty Line (BPL) students, but with a condition that they will plant a tree and take care of it ensuring a green sustainable future. As the College is located in a place with number of tribal communities, it offers a platform of cultural integrity among the students and common people of the state. Besides, the College is proactive in protection of gender equality, religious beliefs, traditional knowledge and heritage conservation etc. In sort the College is mainstay of humankind and a harbinger of social welfare.
