“Our oceans, our future”: Ocean Conference in New York

The spotlight will be on the ocean at United Nations Headquarters in New York from 5 to 9 June 2017. The Ocean Conference puts Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 14 on use of the oceans, seas and marine resources at the center of attention. In particular, the Conference aims to be a turning point regarding maritime pollution and its negative effects for people, animals and nature. Representatives from Governments, non-governmental organizations, the scientific community and many other areas of public life as well as the private sector will gather in New York to prepare a “Call for Action” to support the implementation of SDG 14 along with voluntary commitments for the sake of sustainable ocean use.

Meetings and events during the conference will touch upon all maritime dimensions, ranging from the role of youth and civil society in taking action for the oceans to the importance of underwater cultural heritage. While plenary meetings and partnership dialogues will address the issues on a more formal level, film screenings, a run for the oceans and a special event commemorating World Oceans Day on 8 June will promote the topic further.
