UNAI launches “Music for Peace” series with concert by sarod maestro Amjad Ali Khan

On 24 March 2014 UNAI launched “Music for Peace,” a new conversation series with the objective of learning from world class musicians and music teachers about the role of music in promoting peace, conflict resolution and cross-cultural dialogue.

On 11 March 2014, the Secretary-General met with the newly appointed President of the Fairleigh Dickinson University, Mr. Sheldon Drucker, at UN Headquarters.  The Secretary-General congratulated Mr. Drucker on his appointment and hoped that he would continue the tradition of close partnership between the UN and FDU set by Mr. Michael Adams, his predecessor.

International Women’s Day: Elevating the Conversation on Ending Sexual Violence in Conflict

To commemorate International Women’s Day, on 6 March 2014 the United Nations Academic Impact co-hosted with the Office of the Special Representative of the Secretary-General on Sexual Violence in Conflict and the Enough Project, a special event at UN Headquarters to focus on raising awareness about the role of “conflict minerals” and their link to sexual violence.

Handong Global University holds 2014 Global Entrepreneurship Training in Wench, Ghana


Handong Global University, Republic of Korea, held its 2014 Global Entrepreneurship Training (GET) session in Wench, Ghana from 16 – 22 February. A collaboration between two UNAI members, HGU and Methodist University College, Ghana (MUCG), the session brought together 125 trainees from 7 West African countries. In addition to students, it included professors, organizational heads, business and NGO partners and 45 Ghanaian National Service personnel led by the director of the program of the Government of Ghana.

Global Partnership for Youth in the Post-2015 Agenda

The Office of the Secretary-General’s Envoy on Youth, in partnership with other UN entities, international NGOs, youth groups and stakeholders, launched a crowdsourcing initiative on youth priorities in the post-2015 development agenda. The crowdsourcing initiative, which has been endorsed by the President of the General Assembly, is part of the Global Partnership for Youth that includes over 1,100 organisations from around the world.

At CTAUN annual meeting, a call for promoting peace education

“Promoting peace through education” was the theme of the 2014 annual conference of the Committee on Teaching About the UN (CTAUN), held at UN Headquarters on 31 January.  More 400 teachers from all across the United States took part in the conference that included a plenary session, panel discussions, an interactive workshop, even some music.

The Committee on Teaching About the United Nations (CTAUN), a UNAI partner, will host its 2104 annual teachers’ conference at United Nations Headquarters on 31 January 2014.  The overall theme of the day-long conference is “Promoting peace through education.”

UTech, Jamaica to host IAUP conference, 30 January - 1 February

The University of Technology, Jamaica (UTech) will host the first 2014 annual meeting of the International Association of University President’s (IAUP) in Montego Bay, Jamaica from 30 January – 1 February 2014.The high-level three-day meeting will provide a forum for higher education leaders and institutions from around the world to identify and discuss the major issues and challenges facing higher education today within a global and cross-cultural context.

A Conversation with Nobel Peace Laureate Jody Williams

On 11 February 2014 Jody Williams, the 1997 Nobel Peace Laureate, spoke to UNAI members, students and faculty about her peace activism and discussed the real meaning of peace as part of UNAI's Classroom Conversations series.

On International Migrants Day, UNAI hosts a conversation on migration and development

On 18 December 2013, UNAI hosted a “Classroom Conversation” focusing on the link between migration and development.  Held on International migrants Day, a United Nations observance since 2000, the discussion brought together students and faculty from several UNAI members, including CUNY Graduate, Queens College, Fordham and Sorbonne University (Paris).

New online course on Global Civics

 
A new free online course on Global Civics has been launched recently by the Global Civics Academy.

The course covers issues ranging from climate change to pandemics. Students will examine which centripetal forces are pushing us together, and how they can be managed. The course will survey our options to manage our increasing global interdependence, and will provide the tools for each student to come up with their own version of a global civics.
